Wheelwright Campus Celebrating it's 6th year in 2024!

Wheelwright is located at the southern end of Floyd County in the valley of the Right Fork Otter Creek. There is just one way in and out of the city, via the Junction Bridge, also referred to as "Wheelwright Junction", on state highway 122. Once you cross over the bridge you will be immersed in some of the deepest Appalachian culture and personalities that you'll find anywhere.  You'll also find our second campus, nestled deep in the hollar and closely bordering the creek.  Big Creek Missions Wheelwright Campus opened its doors to it's first volunteers in Spring of 2018 utilizing the existing buildings of a closed down church and medical clinic to house its volunteers, breathing life back into structures that had been previously left to rot.   The Wheelwright campus began slowly putting down roots, taking the model already in place at the original location, adapting and changing it to suit the needs of the Wheelwright community.

During the Spring of 2019, the board hired Bubba and Tammy Roberson to direct the new location. Along with their two children, Cadyn and Asa, they moved to Kentucky from Mobile, Alabama. Prior to accepting the position, Bubba and Tammy were student and young adult pastors and yearly visitors to our main location in Bear Branch. Their experience led to their love for community and mission work, so when the job was open, it was an easy yes. They are celebrating their 5th year at the mission and now call the small, mountain hollar home year-round.

Although both of our locations love and serve our communities and point others to Jesus, the Wheelwright campus offers a more intimate experience.  The facility is smaller.  But can still comfortably house up to 65 volunteers per week, including several smaller bunk rooms to accommodate families with small children or couples that want to be housed together (email for availability). However, it's still an old church so the layout and room arrangement are something we are always trying to improve upon.   The neighbors are closer.  Like right outside the door, as the mission is literally in the center of our 450-member community.  You can step out of the doors of the building and into the mission field.  Connecting with the locals couldn't be any easier.  You won't be able to leave Wheelwright and think you didn't have an opportunity to be submersed in the culture. Whether it’s at “the cage” (basketball court), in someone’s home, or on the sidewalk, it’s never too difficult to spend time with someone. The staff experience is personal.  The staff live and serve right alongside you.  We will lead your morning devotions, cook your meals, turn out the lights, lock the doors, and wish you good night and be there in the morning to do it all over again.

We hope you'll consider serving with us.  We guarantee your group will love our community as much as we do.  If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact bubba@bigcreekmissions.com
